2026 Minimum Wage Monthly Salary & Take-Home Pay: Complete Calculation Guide for Foreign Workers in Korea
2026 Minimum Wage: How Much Is It as a Monthly Salary?
The minimum wage is announced as an hourly rate, but most workers actually receive their pay in the form of a monthly salary. So how much is the minimum wage when converted to a monthly figure?
How the Monthly Conversion Is Calculated
Under Article 5-2 of the Enforcement Decree of the Minimum Wage Act (최저임금법 시행령 제5조의2), the monthly equivalent is calculated using the following formula:
Monthly equivalent = Hourly minimum wage × Monthly contractual working hours
Based on the statutory standard of a 40-hour workweek, the monthly contractual working hours are 209 hours. These 209 hours already include 8 hours per week for the weekly holiday allowance (주휴수당) (paid weekly holiday).
- For a 40-hour workweek: (40 hours + 8 hours weekly holiday) × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months ≈ 209 hours
Therefore, the minimum wage monthly salary is calculated as hourly rate × 209.
Is the Weekly Holiday Allowance Paid Separately?
This is a point of frequent confusion. For monthly-salaried workers, the weekly holiday hours are already included in the 209 monthly contractual hours, so there is no need to pay the weekly holiday allowance as a separate addition. By contrast, workers paid by the hour or by the day must receive the weekly holiday allowance as a separate payment if they work 15 or more hours per week (Article 55 of the Labor Standards Act (근로기준법 제55조)).
Note for foreign workers: Your employment contract may specify terms that differ from the statutory minimum — always check your contract carefully.
Why Is the Take-Home Amount Different?
The monthly equivalent is not the same as the amount deposited into your bank account, because the 4 major insurance premiums (4대보험) and income tax are deducted.
Key deduction items (employee's share):
| Item | Rate (Employee's Share) |
|---|---|
| National Pension (국민연금) | 4.5% |
| Health Insurance (건강보험) | 3.545% |
| Long-Term Care Insurance (장기요양보험) | 12.95% of health insurance premium |
| Employment Insurance (고용보험) | 0.9% |
| Income tax & local income tax (소득세·지방소득세) | Based on the simplified tax withholding table |
After all these deductions, the remaining amount is your actual take-home pay (실수령액). At minimum-wage salary levels the income tax burden is not large, but the 4 major insurance premiums alone account for approximately 9–10% of the monthly salary.
Important Notes When Determining Minimum Wage Violations
Under Article 6 of the Minimum Wage Act (최저임금법 제6조), employers must pay at least the minimum wage. However, not all allowances are included when comparing pay against the minimum wage. The following items are excluded from the minimum wage calculation scope:
- Bonuses not paid every month (the portion exceeding a certain ratio)
- Benefits paid in kind, and certain welfare benefits
- Overtime, night-shift, and holiday work allowances
This means that even if the basic wage alone is below the monthly minimum wage equivalent, it may not constitute a violation if includable allowances bring the total up to or above the minimum wage. Conversely, if the total — including all allowances — still falls short of the minimum wage, it is a violation.
How to Check Whether Your Monthly Salary Meets the Minimum Wage
- Check the basic wage and fixed allowances stated in your employment contract.
- Add up only the items that fall within the minimum wage calculation scope.
- Divide the total by your monthly contractual working hours to convert it to an hourly rate, then compare it with the minimum wage.
