How to Check Your Unemployment Benefits in Korea: Calculator & Eligibility Guide

How Much Unemployment Benefit Can You Receive?

After a sudden job loss, the first questions that come to mind are: "Am I eligible for unemployment benefits?" and "How much will I receive?" Unemployment benefits — more precisely called job-seeker's allowance (구직급여) — are paid under the Employment Insurance Act (고용보험법) to workers who leave their jobs involuntarily, providing livelihood support while they actively seek re-employment.

4 Eligibility Requirements to Check

To receive unemployment benefits, you must satisfy all four of the following conditions under Article 40 of the Employment Insurance Act (고용보험법 제40조).

  1. Within the 18 months before separation, your total insured unit period must be at least 180 days.
  2. Involuntary separation — e.g., recommended resignation, contract expiry, or business closure.
  3. You are willing and able to work but unable to find employment.
  4. You are actively seeking re-employment.

Voluntary resignation is generally not eligible, but exceptions apply when a justifiable reason for separation (정당한 이직 사유) is recognized — such as unpaid wages, workplace harassment, or deteriorating health. Justifiable reasons are listed in Attached Table 2 of the Enforcement Rules of the Employment Insurance Act (고용보험법 시행규칙 별표2), so check carefully.

Note for foreign workers: Your employment contract may specify different conditions, but statutory eligibility is determined solely by the Act.

How Unemployment Benefits Are Calculated

Daily Benefit Amount

Daily benefit = Average wage before separation × 60%

However, upper and lower limits apply.

The 2026 minimum wage is ₩10,030 per hour, so for an 8-hour workday the lower limit is approximately ₩64,192 per day. Because the upper and lower limits are close together, most recipients' actual daily benefit falls within this narrow range.

Scheduled Benefit Days (Payment Period)

The payment period ranges from 120 to 270 days depending on age and insured period.

Insured Period Under 50 Age 50+ and persons with disabilities
Less than 1 year 120 days 120 days
1–3 years 150 days 180 days
3–5 years 180 days 210 days
5–10 years 210 days 240 days
10 years or more 240 days 270 days

Example: A worker aged 45 with 4 years of insured coverage who receives the daily upper limit of ₩66,000 would receive a total of ₩66,000 × 180 days = ₩11,880,000.

Application Process — Quick Summary

  1. Obtain a separation confirmation form (이직확인서) — your employer submits this to the Employment Center (고용센터).
  2. Register as a job-seeker on Work-Net (워크넷).
  3. Visit your local Employment Center or apply online for benefit eligibility.
  4. Once eligibility is confirmed, submit an unemployment recognition application at intervals of 1–4 weeks.

You must apply for benefit eligibility within 12 months of the day after your separation date. If this deadline passes, any remaining scheduled benefit days are forfeited.
